Although it is a short month in school, it has been a very busy one. On our first day back after Christmas, the snow came to welcome us and all the children had the opportunity to go outside and enjoy the snow with their friends.

We have restarted the Urdd Club after school, and Elsa from Urdd Conwy visited the children to create badges. The children who have been attending the CIC Mawr Club have also been having lots of fun playing games with Miss Griffiths and Reverend Owain Davies. It is lovely to see the children enjoying shared activities outside of school hours.

It was also a pleasure to welcome new children to the Language Centre and to see the children celebrating their efforts to speak Welsh together with pupils from Ysgol Dyffryn yr Enfys on Friday morning. The Language Centre Café has been preparing delicious toast and milk for them!

All classes have begun developing new themes for the new term and have already taken part in a variety of learning experiences.

The class theme is nursery rhymes, and the children chose “Fuoch chi rioed ym morio?” to begin with. They have been learning about objects that float and sink, and have gone for a walk around their local environment to discuss what makes it special. We are looking forward to seeing them perform the nursery rhyme after deciding what makes a good performance and how they will do this themselves. The children have also been learning outdoors by feeding the birds and learning about water safety rules.

Years 1 and 2 are also developing nursery rhymes as part of their theme, starting with “Mi welais Jac y Do”. This has come at the perfect time for the small birds around the school, as the children have been busy making bird food and carefully placing it around the school grounds. They also had the opportunity to go for a walk around the local area and use their senses carefully to learn about the world around them.

The children have been creating New Year’s resolutions and are looking forward to the year ahead. In addition, they have started swimming lessons and are thoroughly enjoying being in the pool, with every child growing in confidence. They have also begun developing a theme based on the book James and the Giant Peach, discovering where the peach travelled across the sea from and where it arrived. They have been researching the locations of continents around the world and learning about the major oceans.

Year 5 pupils have taken part in cycling training sessions with FFIT Conwy, and it has been great to hear that they all listened carefully and are ready to ride on the main roads. The children also had the opportunity to take part in the Dim Clem Quiz, finishing fifth across Conwy County, with the “Criw Cymraeg” team coming first in the class – well done!

They also had the chance to speak with Jasmine from Trefriw Community Council, who asked the children to develop ideas to improve Trefriw Cemetery. The best design will be chosen in March, and we look forward to seeing the children’s ideas come to life. In addition, the pupils have been developing their science, data handling, measurement and digital skills by experimenting with a variety of materials to see which works best to help the giant peach land in the sea from a steep slope. There has been a great deal of collaboration and comparison – well done, children!
